The mortality rate associated with viral hepatitis caused by HBV and HCV is 96%, and HBV and HCV are 50–100 times and 10 times, respectively, more contagious than human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). All hepatitis viruses may cause acute viral hepatitis however, hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections may lead to chronic viral hepatitis, which can develop into liver cirrhosis and primary liver cancer. Viral hepatitis is a systemic infection caused by viral replication in the liver by Types A, B, C, D, and E hepatitis. It is caused by a variety of contagious and non-contagious factors such as hepatitis viruses, excessive alcohol consumption (over many years), needle sharing through drug use, autoimmunity, and secondary syphilis. Hepatitis is a condition involving persistent inflammation of the hepatic parenchyma which causes necrosis.
